FESTIVAL DATES

May 23-27, 2019

Welcome to Pula

The International Choral Festival Cantate Croatia takes place in the lovely town of Pula, located just across the water from Italy and chock-full of cultural and historic legacies from Croatia’s rich history. Over the course of four days, your choir will perform in beautiful, historic venues and exchange music with choirs from all over Europe and beyond. The festival culminates in a closing ceremony held at Pula’s grand Municipal Theatre, including individual performances by each choir followed by a common song performed together by all participants.

Located on the Adriatic Coast, this stunningly beautiful country boasts 3,500 miles of coastline. Due to its geographic location, Croatian art, architecture and music blends elements from Italy, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Turkey as well as the Slavic and Byzantine worlds. Be part of Cantate Croatia and let yourself be immersed in all that this hidden gem in Europe’s sunny south has to offer as you make new friends through music!

Welcome to Croatia!  Arrive in Zagreb, and transfer to Pula, on the scenic Istrian Peninsula.  Gather first impressions of this vibrant town on an orientation walk. Known for its unspoiled natural beauty, calm waters, and mild climate, Pula was a major port during the reign of the Roman Empire, and legacies of Roman influence are evident to this day. In the morning, embark on a locally guided excursion to Rovinj, a picturesque fishing port on the Istria’s western coast. Explore the town’s open air market for local olive oil, fruits, vegetables, and truffles and visit St. Euphemia’s Basilica, a Baroque church in Rovinj’s historic Old Town. Climb the basilica’s campanile and take in a stunning view of the sea and surrounding islets.

Return to Pula in the afternoon and relax.  This evening your choir will be invited to perform a concert entertaining festival goers and public guests.   Pula offers wonderful restaurants where dinner can be arranged upon request.

SATURDAY, MAY 25, 2019 | OPENING CEREMONY & FRIENDSHIP CONCERT

Begin the day with a guided sightseeing tour of Pula including the Arch of the Sergii and the Temple of Augustus, dedicated to the first Roman emperor. See the city’s Porta Gemina, or “Twin Gates,” one of the few ancient portals that remain standing and admire the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a 6th century cathedral built on the site where the Christians of Pula gathered to pray in Roman times.

In the afternoon, attend the Opening Ceremony of Cantate Croatia in the elegant Dom Hrvatskih Branitelja concert hall.  Choirs are officially welcomed and invited to socialize over refreshments and hors d’oeuvres.  Spontaneous singing is encouraged!

Tonight, join a Croatian ensemble for a friendship concert with opportunity to mingle and exchange with your pleasant hosts. Dinner will be served following.

SUNDAY, MAY 26, 2019 | WORSHIP SERVICE & CLOSING CONCERT

This morning, visit one of Pula’s historic churches where your choir has been invited to sing as part of the worship service.   The local congregations greatly appreciate your gifts of music.
