FESTIVAL DATES

March 21-25, 2019

Welcome to Rome

Visiting ensembles will be welcomed to this historic region of Italy by local musicians, city authorities, and host organization officials. Festival concerts take place in breathtaking venues throughout the cities and towns of the areas surrounding the southeast of Rome.

Sing together with local Italian choirs as well as choirs from around the world during four exciting days of choral music and cultural exchange. The Festival of Peace and Brotherhood facilitates a deeper sense of respect and understanding between cultures through the common language of music.

“In this historical moment, so scarred by wars and hatred, small gestures are seeds of peace and brotherhood.” -Pope Francis

Itinerary

March 21-25, 2019

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2019 | DEPARTURE

Depart on an afternoon flight from North America bound for Rome, Italy. Select meals and snacks will be served on the flight.

THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2019 | ARRIVE IN ITALY | TOUR ROME | OPENING CEREMONY

Upon arrival, your Music Contact International Tour Manager will greet your group at the airport. Board your private motor coach and embark on a guided panoramic tour of Rome. The combination of Roman antiquities, Christian monuments, and contemporary metropolitan features make Rome a fascinating city to explore. See the ancient Forum area including the Circus Maximus, the location of the Roman chariot races; the Triumphal Arch of Constantine; and the massive Colosseum. Disembark the motor coach and see some of Rome’s famous piazzas and fountains, including the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona, home to the famous fountains by Bernini.

In the afternoon, transfer to the Castelli Romani Region just southeast of Rome. Settle into the hotel and refresh before attending the Opening Ceremony of the Festival of Peace and Brotherhood with introductions, welcoming remarks and concert by Italian host choir. Afterwards, enjoy a welcome meal with other festival participants in the hotel dining room.

FRIDAY, MARCH 22, 2019 | ROMAN CASTLES DISTRICT | FRIENDSHIP CONCERT

After breakfast at the hotel, embark on a guided visit to some of the lovely towns of Castelli Romani or the Roman Castles District. Visiting the Castles area is a tradition dating back to the 1600s when rich noble families would follow the Pope to his summer villa, establishing magnificent estates and country palaces nearby.

After free time for lunch, your group may opt to tour the beautiful Renaissance palace of Villa d’Este . Built in the 1550s, the Villa de’Este estate is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its breathtaking gardens and fountains that dazzle the onlooker.

Later this afternoon, return to the hotel for dinner with time to prepare for your evening performance. Your Friendship Concert will be held in a local church or theater hosted by an ensemble from the Castelli Romani community. Enjoy a special night of singing and sharing music and culture with new Italian friends.

SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 2019 | ROME: VATICAN OR COLOSSEUM | CONCERT

Following breakfast, tour the Vatican Museums or the Colosseum of Ancient Rome:

Vatican City is the world’s smallest state and only European state still ruled by an absolute monarch, the Pope. The Vatican Museums contain one of the world’s greatest art collections with highlights including the Raphael rooms and Michelangelo painted frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Tours of the Vatican end in St. Peter’s Basilica, Italy’s largest, richest and most spectacular center of Catholicism.

The Colosseum of Ancient Rome, known for gladiator fights in front of thousands of spectators, is one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. The history and legends associated with the famous arena are thrilling! A visit to the colosseum also includes a walk among the ancient wonders of the adjacent Forum.

This afternoon, treat yourself to a traditional Italian lunch after which you may explore Palatine Hill, the center most of Seven Hills with scenic viewpoints; admire the Pantheon and experience its near perfect acoustics; or wander the winding cobble-stoned alleyways of Rome’s oldest neighborhood.

This evening, gather in one of Rome’s breathtaking churches to perform as part of the Festival Concert Series. Each ensemble is invited to perform selections from their own repertoire in a diverse display of musical offerings.

Dinner is arranged this evening to complement your performance schedule.

SUNDAY, MARCH 24, 2019 | CASTELLI ROMANI SERVICE | CLOSING CONCERT

This morning, visit a local church where your choir has been invited to sing for the Sunday worship service. Following, enjoy meeting and mingling with the friendly congregation. Choirs who qualify may apply for singing in Holy Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica (choirs must successfully apply to the Vatican Counsel; supplemental fee applies).

After church, have time for lunch in one of the lovely Castelli Romani towns, such as Castel Gandolfo, with its papal summer palace, quaint historic center and tasty restaurants.

This afternoon, your choir will perform in the Festival Closing Concert with choirs from Italy and abroad. Share your ensemble’s musical traditions and enjoy listening to performances by other guest choirs.

Tonight, a lavish farewell dinner party with other festival ensembles rounds out another successful year of Peace and Brotherhood.
